Bilbao

At the kids' request, we took the 2 1/2 hr scenic train from San Sebastian to Bilbao (instead of a 1 hour bus ride). Besides the fact that the train had bathrooms and the bus did not, the scenic tour was worth it. We traveled along the coast and through the mountains ... instead of the highway.

Bilbao is also in the País Vasco Autonomous Community of Spain. We stayed at a great youth hostal - with a computer room, exercise room, and game room. The kids loved the accommodations so much that they didn't want to go out to see the city.

Matthew and I gave the kids the afternoon off and we went to see the city. We experienced some good old-fashioned customer service. The banks in Bilbao didn't have the same kind of cash machines so we had to go inside a bank to withdraw money. Unfortunately, we didn't bring our passports along. The banker could have simply said, "Sorry. Come back when you have your passport." Instead, she asked us which bank we use in Valencia and who we might know there by name. We only knew a couple by their nicknames but that was okay. She called 'Pepe' and confirmed our identity. We would love to know exactly how we were identified because she snickered a little during the call.

Matthew and I saw the inside of the Guggenheim museum. Later, we "forced" the kids to get out to see the outside of the Guggenheim museum.

Of course, we also walked along the river and saw as many parks and churches as we could in the time we had. We went to the old part of the city for dinner.
